How Do I Become a Grand Junction Firefighter?

The next testing for Firfighter will occur late 2010 or 2011. Contact the Human Resource office at 970-244-1512 to complete an interest card for the next testing period.

The testing process to become a Grand Junction Firefighter includes a written test, a physical ability test and a panel interview. Applicants must successfully complete each phase of testing in order to continue with the process. When the candidate is considered for a vacancy, they will be required to successfully complete a suitability interview, a 24 hour station assessment, and a background investigation. Before candidates are hired, they will have a psychological evaluation and physical examination, including a drug screening.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Minimum 18 years of age upon hiring
  • EMT-B certification or proof of current enrollment in a course and the ability to obtain reciprocity if certification is from another state.
  • Excellent health with weight proportion to height
  • Minimum vision 20/30 corrected, 20/100 uncorrected for wearers of hard contacts or glasses (soft contact wearers not subject to uncorrected criterion)
  • Must be able to distinguish red and green
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Colorado drivers license.

Prior to applying, candidates must have Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification or proof of current enrollment in a class. This certification is offered through community colleges, including, Mesa College and the Delta-Montrose Vocational Technical Center. Information on EMS certifications at the Delta-Montrose Vo-Tech Center can be found by calling 970-874-7671 and at Mesa State College at 970-255-2662. The EMT-B course is only offered once or twice each year locally. Applicants with questions regarding reciprocity for out-of-state, and/or National Registry certifications can call 303-692-2980.

Disqualifications

  • Any felony conviction
  • Any conviction for a crime of violence as an adult (18 or over), specifically assaults, domestic violence, etc
  • Any conviction for a "hate crime" such as ethnic intimidation
  • Perjury conviction
  • Any theft conviction regardless of value of item
  • Theft from current employer or a previous employer
  • Illegal drug use and/or current alcohol abuse
  • An alcohol or drug conviction including but not limited to DUI/DWAI
  • Hit and run accident conviction
  • Being under or having been under driving restraint, cancellation, suspension or revocation of driving privileges in Colorado or any other state
