Water Services is responsible for ensuring an adequate supply of high quality, raw water for water treatment or raw water use in the Kannah Creek drainage area and as an irrigation supply for City of Grand Junction properties. This is accomplished by operating and maintaining several reservoirs on the Grand Mesa, including Juniata and Purdy Mesa reservoirs, two twenty-mile long raw water flowlines, as well as intake and diversion structures on streams and ditches in three drainage basins. Monthly snow surveys are also conducted on the Grand Mesa to monitor the latest snow fall measurements.
The City cooperates with many government and private property owners on the Grand Mesa watersheds to preserve water quality, eliminate noxious weeds and protect City water rights. Important partners include the U.S. Forest Service, the State Water Commissioner, Kannah Creek area ranchers, Grand Mesa Reservoir owners and the Powderhorn Ski Area.
