[ARCHIVED] City Provides Guidance on Weed Control

Wildflowers feed bees and butterflies

The wet spring has created a healthy environment for weeds to sprout up throughout Grand Junction. Municipal Code for the City of Grand Junction requires that all weeds and brush exceeding six inches in height be cut to within three inches of the ground. Property owners and lessees are responsible to trim weeds/brush up to the curb of any adjoining street and the center of any adjoining alley.

It is important for property owners to manage weeds so they don’t become unmanageable, unsightly, and out of alignment with local regulations. Effectively managing weeds also helps native plants establish themselves and thrive. Weeds allowed to go to seed will gain a stronger foothold in gardens and may reseed a garden or landscape for years to come. Replacing weedy areas with desirable flowering plants throughout the spring and summer creates a consistent food source for birds, invertebrates and pollinators of all sorts. In addition to adhering to City code, by managing weeds in water wise rock landscaping, residents can help keep Grand Junction beautiful.
