[ARCHIVED] CIRT: Arrest Made in the Sandra Avenue Officer-Involved Shooting

The Grand Junction Police Department is releasing the following information on behalf of the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) about the officer-involved shooting which occurred on 06/28/23 involving the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.  

The investigation of the officer-involved shooting which occurred on 06/28/23 remains ongoing. As with all officer-involved shootings in Mesa County, the CIRT is conducting the investigation.

On 06/28/23, at approximately 10:20 pm, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office attempted to contact a male who started a fire on a property in the 2900 block of Sandra Avenue and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect in the officer-involved shooting received medical treatment immediately following the incident.  Upon release from the hospital on 07/06/23, 43-year-old Robert Castillo was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility and booked on the following:

  • Three Felony Warrants:
    1. FTA: Vehicular Eluding F5 (GJPD 2022-25565)
    2. FTA: Assault on a Peace Officer, Criminal Impersonation, Theft, Obstructing a Peace Officer F6, F5, M2 (GJPD 2021-1824)
    3. FTA: Burglary, Assault, Felony Menacing F3, F4, F5 (GJPD 2022-25247)
  • And the following additional charges:
    1. 1st Degree Assault
    2. 4th Degree Arson
    3. Resisting Arrest
    4. Harassment

The CIRT continues to conduct interviews and collect evidence in this case. As the investigation continues, there may be additional charges. Additional details will be released as appropriate, with sensitivity to the ongoing investigation. Read here for more information about the original incident.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office will be responsible for releasing the name of the involved deputy. As per Mesa County Sheriff’s Office policy, their deputy remains on paid administrative leave.

Once the CIRT has completed its investigation, the findings will be turned over to the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.
