In response to an increase in purse theft incidents, the Grand Junction Police Department is bringing awareness to community members and urging community members to take precautions to protect their belongings.
The Grand Junction Police Department has received an increase in purse and wallet theft reports from various locations, including shopping centers and grocery stores. These incidents typically involve thieves quickly snatching purses or bags from unsuspecting victims and fleeing the scene before the victim realizes they’ve been victimized. Often times, thieves work in groups and use distraction techniques when stealing purses and wallets.
Safety Tips to Prevent Purse and Wallet Theft:
- Stay Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to those around you.
- Secure Your Purse and Wallet: Carry your purse and/or wallet close to your body and keep it zipped or closed at all times. Consider using a crossbody strap type bag, as it can be more difficult for thieves to grab.
- Use Wallets Wisely: Keep your wallet in a secured compartment within your purse. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or valuable items.
- Don’t Give Thieves the Opportunity: Never leave your purse or wallet in an unattended shopping cart or vehicle. Thieves look for crimes of opportunity, so keep your personal belongings with you.
The Grand Junction Police Department encourages anyone who has been a victim of a theft to file an online report or call 970-549-5000. In addition to taking personal precautions, community members are encouraged to share these safety tips with friends and family to help prevent purse thefts and keep the community safer.
