On Wednesday, January 6, Grand Junction City Council officially adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan with a unanimous 7-0 vote. The PROS Master Plan will help guide decisions for the Parks & Recreation Department over the next eight to ten years.

The PROS Master Plan process began back in March of 2020, funded in large part by a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant. Over the past ten months, the Parks and Recreation department has worked closely with the consultant team, Green Play, LLC, DHM Design, RRC and Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture to complete the plan. Public input was collected throughout the process and drove the content outlined in the PROS Master Plan. A considerable amount of work was put into this plan from a variety of individuals and committees including members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, members of the PROS Master Plan Advisory Committee, parks and recreation staff, City leadership and City Council.

“This is the community’s plan for the future of the community’s parks and recreation system”, said Parks and Recreation Director Ken Sherbenou. “It will help ensure the critical contribution of the parks and recreation system to the quality of life in Grand Junction is as strong as possible. We are very grateful for the public engagement that went way beyond what is typical with similar plans in other cities, especially in light of the pandemic”.

The PROS Master Plan outlines top priorities for the parks and recreation system as well as projects to be completed over the next eight to ten years. Top priorities captured from community input include a community center, trail connections and expansions, river conservation, access, and improvements, and an indoor warm water leisure pool. The City of Grand Junction looks forward to improving the parks and recreation system with the priorities and projects outlined in the PROS Master Plan.
