The Grand Junction Police Department has arrested a male in connection with a domestic violence incident that happened on the morning of January 30, 2021.
Shortly after 7:30 A.M. a call came into the dispatch center from a reporting party requesting law enforcement remove a known male at the reporting party’s residence, located in the 200 block of Coventry Court.
At approximately 9:15 A.M. an adult female showed up at the Grand Junction Police Department requesting to speak with an officer. She advised the officer she had been sexually assaulted and physically abused by her husband. The address she reported in connection with the assault, matched the address from the call that was made shortly after 7:30 A.M. to the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center. During the events that unfolded, the victim reported there were also two children inside the residence.
Initial investigation indicated that the original reporting party was the victim’s husband. Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to the residence in the 200 block of Coventry Court to attempt contact with the male suspect. When officers arrived, the male suspect barricaded himself inside the residence.
The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team was called out to assist, along with detectives, and negotiators from the Grand Junction Police Department. A reverse emergency notification was sent out to residents in the apartment complex to shelter in place.
After several hours of failed attempts to make physical contact with the suspect, chemical munitions were released into the residence. The suspect, Hyun Choi, was apprehended shortly after and taken into custody without further incident.
Choi was remanded to the Mesa County Jail on the following charges:
- 2nd Degree Assault
- 2nd Degree Kidnapping
- Felony Menacing
- Sexual Assault
- False Imprisonment
- Domestic Violence
- Child Abuse
- Obstruction of a Telephone Service
