Grand Junction Parks & Recreation staff has installed a new skate park at Las Colonias Park. This new amenity located in the parking lot west of the Las Colonias dog parks and east of the amphitheater. The new skate park is designed for all ages and skill levels.
This new amenity covers 7,000 square feet and includes many features found in a traditional skate park. The skate park is semi-mobile and will be primarily located on a multi-use parking lot for Las Colonias. This allows the skate park to be relocated as needed. Components of the skate park are secured to the concrete, ensuring the equipment cannot be moved when in use. The space will act as overflow parking for Las Colonias when the skate park is located elsewhere.
The pandemic caused an increase in need for close-to-town outdoor recreation opportunities. The installation of this skatepark is part of the Parks & Recreation Department’s response to this increased need.
According to the Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Report, for the period from August 28th to October 9th, Mesa County experienced a 105% increase in parks visitation when compared with before the start of the pandemic (https://www.google.com/covid19/mobility/). This was the single largest increase in usage among all 65 Colorado counties. Due to the increase in utilization, Grand Junction Parks and Recreation is responding by providing increased outdoor recreation opportunities.
“The new skate park is the latest improvement to our burgeoning third regional park facility at Las Colonias”, said Parks and Recreation Director Ken Sherbenou. “Las Colonias is increasingly rivaling the other two, the Lincoln Park Sports Complex and Canyon View Regional Park”.
