Updated Riverfront Trail Closure & Detour

The City of Grand Junction and its contractor are revising the temporary closure that is currently in effect for the Colorado Riverfront Trail. Effective immediately, the west-end closure located at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and the riverfront trail, within the Riverside neighborhood, will remain closed. From the west-end closure, extending to the southeast, the trail will remain closed for approximately 3,000-feet, or 0.60 miles, to the revised east-end closure. The closure is anticipated will remain for approximately five weeks, with the completed new trail opening the week of May 24th. The primary reason for this temporary closure extension is due to additional required utility work at the intersection of Hale and Park Avenue, as well as overhead electrical work being completed by Xcel Energy.

As established in the previous closure and detour route, bicycle and pedestrian traffic shall be directed along the detached sidewalk, on the south side of Riverside Parkway. For those traveling east along the parkway, the revised route will direct users to the intersection of Dos Rios Drive and Riverside Parkway. Users will then turn south on Dos Rios Drive and continue south along the newly paved roadway for approximately 350-feet to the first fork in the road, then turn left at the new Dos Rios Court, and travel an additional 100-feet. There will be a newly poured sidewalk on the south side of Dos Rios Court, as well as a new concrete path that continues south approximately 150-feet and connects with the existing riverfront trail. This connector sidewalk will allow users to continue southeast along the normal riverfront trail route. This connection with the existing riverfront trail will also be the location of the revised east-end closure. The segment of the riverfront trail west of this connection point shall remain closed until the full trail is opened the week of May 24th.

For those traveling west, the revised detour no longer requires users to travel up and over the 5th street overpass. Users will be able to access the normal route that passes under the 5th street bridge until the east-end closure is reached. The east end closure, measured from the current closure location (on the east side of the 5th street), has been moved west along the trail, approximately 2,750-feet or 0.52 miles. Once users reach the east-end closure, they will be directed to the north, along the same new 150-foot concrete path extension, where they will connect with Dos Rios Court, then turn right at Dos Rios Drive, and continue north for 350-feet to the intersection with Riverside Parkway. Users can then continue along the original detour route. The original detour route will continue northwest along the parkway, then direct trail users to the intersection of Lawrence and Fairview Avenues, within the Riverside neighborhood, then turn west along Fairview Avenue until it connects with the riverfront trail, next to the west-end closure and the Colorado River.

Work will take place Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The overall trail closure will take approximately 5-weeks to complete.

Advanced notification will be given if any additional access must be temporarily closed during daytime hours.

The Contractor will provide traffic control and adequate detour signage to help trail users through and around the work area if needed.

Please exercise caution around the construction equipment and follow all traffic warning signs in the work areas.
