GJFD Responds to Wildfire and River Rescue Back to Back

Wildland/River

At 5:27 PM Grand Junction Fire Department responded to reports of a grass fire on the 2200 block of Shiprock Road, possibly caused by a truck backfiring. When crews arrived on the scene they found two homes threatened by the fire. Two crews were able to successfully protect the homes and put out the fire. No one was hurt. Due to dry and windy conditions, the fire burned approximately three acres; however, no property was damaged. GJFD responded with Engine 5, Brush 4, and a Battalion Chief.

At 6:38 PM GJFD responded to the area of the 5th Street bridge when a bystander called 911 to report an adult and two children in distress on the river. When crews arrived they found the adult and two children on an island in the river. GJFD was able to get all three patients safely to shore where they were medically evaluated and transported to a local hospital.  GJFD responded to the call with Truck 1, Rescue 1, Ambulance 1, Ambulance 3, a Battalion Chief, and an EMS officer.
