The City of Grand Junction invites the public to attend a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the BioCNG Storage and Automation Project on Thursday, July 29 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at the CNG filling station, located on the north end of the City Municipal Campus, near Riverside Pkwy (333 West Ave. C). Six years ago, the City embarked on a renewable/clean energy project to capture biogas generated at the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Plant and convert it to renewable compressed natural gas (CNG). This CNG is used to fuel several City of Grand Junction fleet and Grand Valley Transit vehicles.
Recently, City staff and project partners embarked on a project to optimize and capture the remaining 21% of biogas flare. With the support of Mesa County and with co-funding from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), the BioCNG Storage and Automation Project will provide significant benefits to the community that align with the City of Grand Junction's sustainability efforts and the One Grand Junction Comprehensive Plan.
The BioCNG Storage Project will:
- Minimize flaring of biogas at the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Improve air quality by reducing 500,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year - the equivalent of taking 50 cars off the road
- Maximize beneficial use of a renewable energy source
- Reduce reliance on fossil fuel-derived CNG
- Pave the way for increasing the number of Grand Valley Transit buses and City vehicles that can be fueled with renewable natural gas
