Update:
As of Friday January 28, the project’s General Contractor, Shaw Construction, indicated the structural steel needed to replace the material damaged in the crane incident is projected to arrive onsite between February 21 & February 25. Once the replacement materials are onsite the project team will work additional hours in an effort to reestablish the project’s original timeline of completion before the Junior College World Series (JUCO).
The replacement steel is currently being fabricated and several variables can affect the projected delivery date. If a delay in delivery occurs, Shaw Construction is confident that the original schedule for completion will be met so long as no other unforeseen incidents occur.
Over the past week, visible progress has been made to the Suplizio Field grandstands in the areas not affected by the crane incident. The project is progressing elsewhere throughout the facility, as the foundations at Stocker Stadium are completed and erection of the steel structure is scheduled to begin the week of February 14.
Previously released information:
On Wednesday, January 19, 2022, a crane that was erecting structural steel for the new bleachers at Suplizio Field failed and fell onto the newly built steel and field. The cause of the crane failure is still under investigation. All proper safety procedures and precautions were in place. Thankfully, no individuals were injured in the incident.
As of 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, the failed crane was removed. Any damaged materials on the construction site have since been removed.
About the project, the City of Grand Junction, the Grand Junction Baseball Committee (JUCO), Colorado Mesa University (CMU) and School District #51, have partnered to complete a major renovation of the Lincoln Park Stadium. The current renovation includes complete replacement of the grandstands behind home plate and along the 3rd baseline at Suplizio Field, new west grandstands at Stocker Stadium, new entrance pavilions, and IT/AV upgrades throughout the facility.
