On Wednesday, January 19, 2022, a crane that was erecting structural steel for the new bleachers at Suplizio Field failed and fell onto the newly constructed steel structure and field. The cause of the crane failure is still under investigation. All proper safety procedures and precautions were in place. Thankfully, no individuals were injured in the incident.
As of 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, the damaged crane was removed and any damaged materials on the construction site were also removed. The project’s General Contractor, Shaw Construction, is managing the impacts of this unforeseen event and is currently obtaining additional materials to minimize impacts to the project timeline.
At this time, the impact to the construction schedule and original completion date of early May is unknown. Shaw will have more information on replacement materials and that timeline by Friday, January 28. The construction team is working to get the project back on track by expediting these materials and planning to work additional labor hours once the material is onsite. Work is still progressing on Suplizio and the Stocker Stadium side of the complex. Additional information regarding the project timeline will be shared as it becomes available.
About the project, the City of Grand Junction, the Grand Junction Baseball Committee (JUCO), Colorado Mesa University (CMU) and School District #51, have partnered to complete a major renovation of the Lincoln Park Stadium. The current renovation includes complete replacement of the grandstands behind home plate and along the 3rd baseline at Suplizio Field, new west granstands at Stocker Stadium, new entrance pavilions, and IT/AV upgrades throughout the facility.
