The City of Grand Junction Hosts Community Recreation Center Public Workshop

The City of Grand Junction has scheduled a public meeting focused on the proposed Community Recreation Center (CRC) for Tuesday, July 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lincoln Park Barn, 12th Street, south of North Avenue.

The public meeting is part of a series that will include focus groups designed to gather community input about specific building programs and amenities at a potential community recreation center in Grand Junction. The Community Recreation Center planning process is scheduled to conclude in the fall of 2022. For those unable to attend the workshop, the City is providing information about the amenities and design options at GJSpeaks.org. Community members can review project information and provide input in the form of written or voice comments at www.gjspeaks.org/projects/crc.

The upcoming public meeting follows those held in June to discuss the location of a potential community center. At the City Council Workshop in early July and following a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Council approved narrowing the focus for a potential community recreation center at the Matchett Park location.

The current process of reviewing the potential for a recreation center in Grand Junction began In early 2022. Colorado Mesa University faculty conducted a statistically valid survey. The survey results indicated community support for a CRC. The survey was designed to understand preferences related to topics such as overall need, funding, location, facilities, and fees. This survey was a direct result of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan adopted in early 2021 in which a community recreation center was the highest priority.

The PROS Master Plan outlines top priorities for the parks and recreation system as well as projects to be completed over the next eight to ten years. Additional public input will be collected to steer the plan regarding the future of a recreation in Grand Junction. As with the PROS Master Plan, and with the survey conducted earlier this year by Colorado Mesa University, community input continues to drive this process.
