The City of Grand Junction is currently soliciting applications for volunteers to serve on the Grand Junction Housing Authority Board and the Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals.
“Participation of community members at all levels of the governmental process is valued and encouraged by the City of Grand Junction,” stated City Clerk Amy Phillips. The City has 18 boards, committees, commissions, and authorities, made up of more than 100 volunteers who dedicate their time to help guide the direction of policies and decisions that impact the quality of life in Grand Junction.
One of two boards with current openings is the Grand Junction Housing Authority which provides more than 700 quality, affordable apartments to Grand Junction area residents of modest incomes. Additionally, the organization assists over 1,200 individuals and families pay rent in market-rate apartments throughout the community, among other housing and housing assistance programs.
Volunteers interested in serving on this board should have a background in finance, real estate development, human services, and health care. Financial experience (including banking, lending, ability to understand complex financial statements, etc.) is preferred. Members should expect to attend regular board meetings the first Tuesday of each month and the occasional additional meeting when called upon, a total of about four to six hours per month.
The other board with openings is the City of Grand Junction Planning Commission. This board makes decisions on planning and zoning-related issues and makes recommendations to the City. The Planning Commission was directly involved in drafting the recently adopted cannabis land-use regulations and will be the advisory board responsible for recommending the upcoming zoning and development code update to City Council. The Planning Commission meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, with workshops scheduled as needed. The Planning Commission is comprised of seven members and two alternate members who make up the Zoning Board of Appeals, along with the Planning Commission Chair. The Zoning Board of Appeals meets as needed and decides on appeals and exceptions related to the Zoning and Development Code.
City Council is responsible for appointing volunteers to these boards. To apply for volunteer positions on a board or commission visit www.gjcity.org/177/Boards-Commissions.
