[ARCHIVED] GJFD Responds to Motor Home Fire

Burned motor home with fire engine in background

At 5:51 PM yesterday Grand Junction Fire Department responded to reports of a home on fire on the 2900 block of North Avenue. There were significant flames and heavy black smoke coming from a Class A motor home. With high heat and windy conditions, the fire was threatening two additional homes and a commercial building. Multiple people in the area quickly called 911 which aided with a quick response. As crews arrived on scene they found one person reporting injuries who received care on scene but declined transport to the hospital. Everyone else had safely evacuated the area. Heavy traffic in the area made access challenging, but awareness of the area allowed crews to access the fire from all sides using alternate routes. Crews were able to quickly attack the fire and successfully protect the additional three buildings with no other injuries reported. The motor home was a total loss along with a fence and some stored items in the yard. There was minimal damage to the additional three buildings. No other injuries were reported.

GJFD responded with Ambulance 1, Ambulance 2, Engine 2, Engine 4, Truck 1, Truck 6, and a Battalion Chief. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly and helped with getting the injured person to a safe place as well as traffic control in the congested area. The American Red Cross is assisting one displaced adult. It was determined that the fire was caused accidentally as a result of mechanical work.
