[ARCHIVED] City Moves Ahead on Community Recreation Center Following Voter Approval

CITY OF GRAND JUNCTION MOVES AHEAD ON COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER FOLLOWING VOTER APPROVAL

With voter approval of the recent ballot measure, the City of Grand Junction is moving forward with plans for a Community Recreation Center (CRC). The plan adopted by City Council in 2022 was developed with a robust community outreach process and will guide the final design and construction of the new facility.

Community engagement and feedback will continue to be a key factor in the final design of the facility and will include meetings and presentations as well as opportunities to provide input through the city’s website.

To fully design the facility, the city will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for professional architectural and engineering services. The contract with the recommended architect and engineer group is anticipated to be considered for approval by City Council within the next two to three months.

A separate RFP will be issued for the selection of a Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC). The CMGC will provide pre-construction services during the design process to ensure the project stays on budget. The contract for the recommended CMGC is anticipated to come to City Council for consideration and approval within the next five to six months.

Once an architect and engineer group is selected, design is projected to take approximately 12 months, followed by another 18 months for construction. Financing of the facility will include the sale of bonds to create approximately $70,000,000 and the new 0.14 percent sales tax dedicated to the CRC will begin July 1, 2023. The city will also pursue grants to support the facility described in the 2022 CRC Plan.

The approximate grand opening of the Grand Junction Community Recreation Center is planned for fourth quarter of 2025.
