On June 18, 2018, Doug Shoemaker was sworn in as the Chief of Police for the City of Grand Junction.


Chief Shoemaker came to the Grand Junction Police Department after over 26 years of service with the Jefferson City Police Department in Missouri. Chief Shoemaker has extensive experience managing and leading a variety of police units, including:

  • Community Services
  • Investigations
  • Narcotics
  • Patrol
  • Traffic

He also served as the Public Information Officer in a collateral role for over 12 years.


During his time in Missouri, he was involved with national and international events and outreach efforts during critical incidents such as a mass shooting event at a manufacturing plant in his jurisdiction as well as the NAACPs Journey for Justice, a march from Ferguson, Missouri, to Jefferson City to address the Michael Brown shooting that occurred in August of 2014.

Chief Shoemaker is a member of the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executive Research Forum, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He was appointed by the IACP president to the position of Committee Chair for the Police Standards Ethics and Image Committee, one of IACPs 27 worldwide committee chair positions. He also serves as Vice Chair of the IACPs Public Information Officer's Section, with duties to collaborate with other media experts and establish best practices in public outreach and media relations.


He holds a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a Masters of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Missouri, and a Doctorate in Education from Wilmington University in Delaware.
